Energize the BoP! - Energy Business Models for Low-Income Markets

Background

1.6 billion people still lack access to electricity, above all in Asia and Africa. The market for energy efficient products is even bigger. European companies are leading providers of technologies that can improve the quality of life for bil- lions of people at the base of the global income pyramid (BoP) and boost productivity.

What is missing are business models that can deliver these products and services profitably. Doing business in the slums and villages of the developing world is challenging. With this workshop, companies will learn to develop sustainable business models that can strengthen their CSR engagement and build future growth markets.

Objectives

  • To provide participants with options for designing energy business models specifically suited for low-income markets. The “Inclusive Energy Business Model Generator” is a new tool based on in-depth empirical research from more than 30 case studies.
  • To create a network of actors from the renewable and energy efficiency as well as the finance industry.

Program

  • Day 1: The big picture on energy and poverty, specificities of low-income markets, business idea pitches. The day ends with a "Energy Sector Dialogue"
  • Day 2: Development of energy business models using the “Inclusive Energy Business Model Generator”.
