Matrix Challenge
Background
Developing business in the slums and villages of the developing world is a challenge. Unfavourable market conditions increase transaction costs and demand unconventional solutions. The Inclusive Business Matrix Challenge is a tool to systematically review the challenges and identify potential solutions. It is based on insights of the UNDP Growing Inclusive Markets Initiative, as described in the report “Creating Value for All – Strategies for Doing Business with the Poor”
Content
The Inclusive Business Matrix Challenge is a one-day workshop for companies and entrepreneurs who plan to or are already engaged in building business in a developing context. During the workshop, participants will
- Map their current business model (idea) with a view to the relevant stakeholders
- Identify constraints in the business environment
- Come up with potential solutions for the constraints
- Prioritize solutions
In this way, the workshop opens up new possibilities to improve the business model and enable it for sustainability and growth.
Setup
Companies and entrepreneurs interested in the Inclusive Business Matrix Challenge can send their requests to Christina Gradl (c.gradl@emergia.de). Workshops are scheduled on request and are typically conducted at the company site. A one hour interview is required in advance of the workshop in order to provide the moderator with basic information on the business model.
Experiences
MicroEnergy International used the Matrix Challenge to further develop its business approach in Tanzania.
